Korean Delegation Visits Hidex for Hands-On Training in Liquid Scintillation Counting
June 18, 2025
In May, we hosted a group of delegates from Korea for advanced training on our liquid scintillation counters.
We had the pleasure of welcoming a group of delegates from leading Korean nuclear and research institutions to our headquarters in Turku, Finland. The visitors came from the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), and Kyungpook National University. Each participant brought valuable expertise in nuclear safety, environmental radioactivity monitoring, and radiation research.
What was the objective of the training?
The main goal of their visit was to deepen their understanding of our liquid scintillation counters, especially the Hidex 300 SL and Hidex ULLA, and how these instruments are used to analyze environmental samples such as groundwater, rainwater, soil, and concrete. The training included a combination of theoretical sessions, hands-on demonstrations, and workshops on MikroWin and Valo software. Many participants told us they appreciated the practical approach, which helped them better understand both the instruments and the software.
“For me, this was my first time working in this field,” one participant from KINS shared. “I do not perform experiments myself, but I review documentation from nuclear facilities. So it was important for me to understand the principles of liquid scintillation counting. The educational materials and explanations were incredibly helpful.”
How did their first trip to Finland go?
For many in the group, this was their first time visiting Finland. We were glad to offer them not only technical insight but also a chance to experience Finnish culture. They commented on how quiet and clean Helsinki and Turku felt, how friendly the local people were, and how surprising it was to see daylight late into the night. The traditional sauna experience also left a strong impression.
“Everything was so different from Korea. The streets were quiet, the people were kind, and the environment was so clean,” one delegate said. “We really appreciated the opportunity to not only learn but also to experience Finnish life.”
What does knowledge transfer across continents look like?
Our experts Elmo Wiikinkoski, Ari Lehmusvuori, and Risto Juvonen received sincere thanks from the group for their detailed presentations and support during the training. The delegation shared that they will be transferring the knowledge they gained to their teams back in Korea, where interest in liquid scintillation counting is growing.
“Our manager specifically asked us to learn everything in detail and share it with our coworkers,” one participant told us. “The presentations and documentation you provided will help us do exactly that.”
Korea continues to be one of our key markets, and we are proud to support institutions that are committed to safety, innovation, and environmental stewardship. We thank our Korean partner B&B Co., Ltd. and the visiting delegates for making the long journey to Finland and dedicating their time to learning more about our technology.
